India’s IT Engineering Graduates Face Crisis of Employability

In an increasingly digital world, where software development, artificial intelligence, and data engineering are reshaping economies, India’s vast pool of engineering graduates is facing a stark reality. Despite producing hundreds of thousands of IT engineers every year, a significant portion remains unemployable in core technical roles, largely due to a widening skills gap.

Employability of IT Engineering Graduates Remains Alarmingly Low

A comprehensive employability survey conducted in 2019 revealed that only 9.9% of Indian IT engineering graduates were capable of writing functionally correct and compilable code. In other words, less than one in ten students could develop basic programs that a machine can execute without errors.

This is not a minor gap in knowledge. Coding is foundational to the IT industry, and the inability to produce clean, working code indicates a deeper deficiency in problem-solving and algorithmic thinking.

Comparatively, the United States stood at 34.1%, and even China, often viewed as a peer in global tech competition, outpaced India slightly, with 8.6% of graduates being able to code correctly.

The comparison is not just academic—it has real-world implications. Indian graduates are entering a job market where companies, especially product-based and startup firms, demand ready-to-code talent. According to the same survey, nearly 90% of Indian engineers lacked the programming and algorithmic skills required to be considered employable by IT product companies.

Beyond Code – The Broader Skill Deficit in Tech Domains

The concern over the employability of IT engineering graduates extends beyond just writing code. Emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, data engineering, and wireless communication are defining the next wave of digital transformation. Yet, Indian engineering graduates appear grossly underprepared to participate in this evolution.

Only 2.5% of graduates have the skills to work in AI, a field that is already influencing industries from healthcare to finance. In data engineering, the numbers are similarly dismal at 4.5%, while only 5.3% are equipped with knowledge of wireless technologies.

This lack of technical depth severely limits job opportunities in high-growth sectors. As global tech firms expand their operations, they are looking not just for degree holders, but for professionals capable of delivering from day one. However, only 3% to 4% of graduates are considered fit for roles like product engineer or startup engineer—positions that demand both hard skills and a practical mindset.
Internship experience and project-based

learning, two proven ways of bridging the industry-academia gap, are also often ignored in Indian engineering institutions. Many students graduate without ever having worked on a real-world application or spent time solving industry-grade problems.

A National Challenge in a Global Context

India’s challenge with engineering employability is not just an educational issue—it is an economic one. The country aspires to be a global tech hub, yet it risks being outpaced by peers unless systemic reforms are made.

To stay competitive, there must be an urgent rethinking of engineering education, with greater focus on hands-on coding, project work, and exposure to real-world technologies. Without this, the country’s young tech talent will continue to fall short, despite their numbers and potential.

As the global race for digital innovation accelerates, India must confront the hard truth: quantity alone is no longer enough. Quality—measured by practical skills, coding ability, and readiness for evolving tech roles—is what will define the future of its IT workforce.
